The future of hospitality: destination hotels

When is the time to choose your holidays, a universe of options opens up in which to choose. The world is full of nooks to discover to the  taste of all kinds of consumers. Although recently there is the situation that the destination is not the most important thing; the key factor that makes one choose the place where to travel is the accommodation, these are the so-called destination hotels.

The destination hotels are unique places that, due to several factors, can not be found in other parts of the world. From the hotel factory we have analyzed the factors that make a hotel not only where to stay when you go on vacation, but the hotel is the reason for the trip.

The 5 factors that must be highlighted to make a hotel a destination hotel, are the following:

1- Segmentation

Segmentation is the main factor to create these destination hotels, this strategy consists in creating hotels with a series of characteristics that make them attractive for certain segments of society. Not all hotels attract the attention of all people, it is necessary to focus on a specific type of public. Some examples are: hotels for millennials, musical hotels, hotels for gamers…


2- Location

A lighthouse in the middle of Finisterre, an igloo in the highest part of the mountains of Aramón … The important thing is not the destination itself, but the location. If the goal is to go skiing, there are a lot of hotels, but if your intention is to sleep at the top of the mountain, the options are reduced to only one, and more if you add that you can sleep in an igloo hotel. Locating your hotel in a unique place is one of the most important factors to get a hotel destination.


3- Experiences and personalization

Taking into account the daily hustle and bustle, when it’s time to go on vacation there are many people who seek to live new things, out of their usual routine and that are personalized. These experiences can be inside or outside the hotel. That is why many times this is the main driver in the search for vacations. Seeing the stars can be done from many points of geography and daily; But sleeping under the stars in a bubble room located in the Bardenas desert can not be done every day.


4- Architecture

The design and architecture of the hotel will be another important demand for the client. Within this point there are several factors that influence:

  • Known artist: Frank Gehry or Santiago Calatrava are famous architects internationally recognized for works like the Guggenheim or the building of the DG bank in Berlin, in the case of Gehry, or the City of Arts and Sciences of Valencia in the case of Calatrava. Having one of their works in your city is already a claim, and if the hotel has been designed by them, it becomes a destination. As is the case of the Hotel-Bodega Marqués de Riscal or the Ayre Hotel in Oviedo.

  • Historical architecture: Not every day you have the opportunity to sleep in a medieval castle, in a remodeled 17th century convent or in an old mental sanatorium. There are hotels in historic buildings that only because of the history they have behind, are a destination.

  • Unique architecture: it is not necessary to have a hotel designed by some known architect or be in a building of the twelfth century, there are modern buildings that due to their avant-garde design or their minimalism make them special.

5-Gastronomy

Gastronomy is the easiest variable to modify and can make your hotel go from being one more in the destination to being a destination hotel. To become a reference in gastronomy, it’s important to bet on a striking and renowned F & B offer. That is why many hotels take advantage and open their doors integrating a Michelin Star restaurant or give their kitchen to these chefs. There are many examples like the Akelarre Restaurant, with the luxury hotel of the same name, or the recent opening of the Hotel Sants Metges, in which chef Jordi Cruz has opened his new restaurant, Atempo.
